Why I Built VRT — The Companion App for Record Restore Users

Record Restore removes contamination from the groove. That’s what it was designed to do, and the testing confirms it: an 11dB improvement in signal-to-noise ratio in Dave Askew’s blind analysis, complete elimination of electrostatic charge on the record surface, and physical removal of the entire slurry — dissolved binders, microplastics, abrasive dust — in a single peel.

But after you’ve treated a record, a question remains: when does it need treating again?

Not in the abstract. “Treat every ten plays” is a reasonable guideline. The harder question is which specific records in your collection are approaching that threshold right now. Which ones did you treat six weeks ago and have played eight times since? Which ones haven’t been touched since before summer? Which ones are you about to play on a stylus that has more hours on it than you realize?

If you can’t answer those questions, the cleaning routine doesn’t fully close. You’re treating records when you remember to, or when something sounds off — which is the reactive cycle the research tells us to avoid.

That’s the gap VRT fills.

What VRT does

VRT is a web app that logs every listening session: the album played, the cartridge configuration, the date, the duration. From that log, it builds a care status for every record in your collection.

For Record Restore users, it tracks treatment dates and play counts per record. When a record approaches its treatment threshold — however many plays you’ve set as your trigger — VRT flags it before the next session, before the stylus drops. Not after you’ve already noticed something sounds off.

It also applies the wear multipliers the research supports: a 1.35× adjustment for 45 RPM sessions, based on the groove velocity difference between 45 and 33⅓ RPM and Archard’s wear equation; and a 1.6× adjustment for records that haven’t been treated within the last ten plays, from Weiler’s 1954 findings on contamination and stylus wear. The hours shown for each cartridge aren’t raw clock time — they’re wear-adjusted hours, calibrated to what the stylus actually experienced.

You set a service threshold for each cartridge. VRT tracks against it and surfaces the alert when you reach it.

And it tracks your Record Restore fluid levels in milliliters, so the stock that enables the cleaning routine is monitored alongside the records that need it.

Why these two things belong together

The contamination problem and the tracking problem are the same problem from two angles.

Weiler’s research established that playing contaminated records increases stylus wear by up to 1.6×. But that multiplier only means something if you can identify which records are contaminated — which means knowing how many plays have accumulated since the last treatment. Without a log, you’re guessing. With VRT, the multiplier is applied automatically, and your stylus hour estimate reflects reality instead of optimistic arithmetic.

The logic runs in reverse too. A worn stylus damages records more aggressively than a fresh one — and it does so silently, before you can hear it. Knowing your wear-adjusted stylus hours, and being alerted before you cross the service threshold, means the records you’ve treated with Record Restore are being played back by a stylus that’s within its reliable operating window.

What building it revealed

One thing I didn’t fully anticipate before having the data: how uneven the care actually is, even for collectors who think they’re on top of it.

When you can see play counts and treatment dates side by side across a whole collection, patterns appear that are invisible otherwise. Certain records get played far more often than others — which means they accumulate both play count and stylus wear at a faster rate. Records that were treated once and then fell back into rotation without being flagged again. A stylus that crossed its service threshold without anyone noticing, because there was no clock running on it.

Most of the damage in a collection doesn’t come from neglect. It comes from not knowing. VRT is an attempt to fix that.
